Week of October 24 - October 28th
1. A. Naive (adjective) - Showing a lack of experience. B. The child was very naive because he clearly did not know what to do. C. Children 2. A. Niche (verb) - Place or position. B. The new student was out of her niche, but she still made many new friends. C. Penguins would have trouble finding there niche if they were to travel to a warm place. 3. A. Obliterate (verb) - Destroy utterly; wipe out. B. The tornado would soon obliterate the entire town, but the kids had no clue of what was about to come. C. Tornado 4. A. Gratify (verb) - Give pleasure or satisfaction. B. I made sure to gratify the question before answering it on the test, so I would not get it wrong. C. Your parents with be satisfied if you are honest. 5. A. Infinite (adjective) - Limitless or endless. B. Many people believe that outer space is infinite, but others think that it is not. C. Numbers Week of October 31st - November 3rd 6. A. Coefficient () - The numerical factor of a term B. In math, the coefficient is the number that is next to a variable and it is being multiplied by the variable. C. 6 is the coefficient in 6c 7. A. Multiplicative Inverse (noun) - Two numbers with a product of one, also known as the reciprocal of a number. B. In math class we are learning about the reciprocal of a number, and that it is the multiplicative inverse. C. 7/1 times 1/7 = 1 8. A. Identity (noun) - An equation that is true for every value of the variable. B. An example of identity is when you add any number to zero and get the same number. C. 9 + 0 = 9 9. A. Null Set (noun) -empty set, meaning there is no solution for an equation B. There can only be one null set because there is only one way a set can contain nothing. C. { } (Empty set, or nothing) 10. A. Properties (noun) - statements that are true for all numbers B. The commutative properties state that if you change the order of numbers it does not change the results, but this only works for multiplying and adding. C. 3 + 6 = 6 + 3 Week of November 7th - November 10th 11. A. Embody (verb) - be an expression of or give a tangible or visible form to (an idea, quality, or feeling.) B. The student council embodies the whole school because they are the people who represent us. C. The president represents America 12. A. Exasperate (verb) - irritate intensely; infuriate B. I exasperate when I don't understand how to do a math problem, but eventually I calm down and finish the problem. C. People make me mad. 13. A. Fiasco (noun) - a thing that is a complete failure, especially in a humiliating way. B. Even though I am awful at softball I thought I would try it, but it just turned into a fiasco. C. When I try do play softball it ends up a fiasco. 14. A. Garnish (verb) - decorate or embellish B. I had to garnish the cakes and cupcakes for the wedding, but I had to get it done in two days. C. Decorating cupcakes 15. A. Heritage (noun) - property that is or may be inherited B. When a person dies, there children get there heritage. C. I will inherit my grandmother's jewelry. Week of November 29th - December 3rd 16. A. Plate (noun) - A large, rigid slab of solid rock. B. Plate tectonics is a theory that the outer layer of the Earth is divided in to plates that move across Earth, like sheets of ice on water. C. There is a couple of dozen plates on the outer layer of Earth. 17. A. Ring of Fire (noun) - A major area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where a large number of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. B. The Ring of Fire is where many volcanoes erupt and many earthquakes occur. C. The Ring of Fire is located around the Pacific Ocean. 18. A. Pangea (noun) - A supercontinent that included all current land masses. B. The pangea was a huge land of mass that was around millions of years ago, but it started to break apart. C. The pangea was when all continents were connected. 19 A. Fault (noun) - A crack in the Earth's crust. B. A fault occured when the large earthquake happened in the state of Utah. C. An earthquake happens on a fault line. 20. A. Isotatic Rebound (noun) - The rise of land masses that were depressed by the huge weight of ice sheets during the last glacial period. B. Many hills in Ohio were depressed and became flat lands after the glaciers. C. It causes the lithosphere to rise and sink. Week of December 5 - December 9 21. A. Sympathy (noun) - Feelings of pity and sorrow for someone else's misfortune. B. C. 22. A. Empathy (noun) - The ability to understand and share the feelings of another. B. C. 23. A. Apathy (noun) - the lack of interst, enthusiasm, or concern B. C.
